Appropriate Assessment

Environmental Assessments are essential for every project.  To grant consent to a project, it must undergo an assessment of its implications.

Ecoquest offers a wide range of these Environmental Assessments.

Appropriate Assessments

The Habitats Directive outlines the necessity for Appropriate Assessment, aiming to safeguard the survival of Europe’s most valuable and threatened species and habitats. It designates specific geographical areas crucial for these species and habitats, as Special Areas of Conservation (SAC)and Special Protection Areas (SPA), collectively referred to as European sites. Irish legislation transposes both the Habitats Directive and the Birds Directive.

In the planning process for all projects, especially those located near European sites, Appropriate Assessments or Screening Assessments and Natura Impact Statements (NIS) play a pivotal role. The Appropriate Assessment process consists of four key stages. While all projects progress through stage 1, some proceed to stage 2, few advance to stage 3 and stage 4 projects are rare.

THE FOUR KEY STAGES OF APPROPRIATE ASSESSMENT:

Stage 1 – Screening for Appropriate Assessment

Stage 2 – Appropriate Assessment (NIS)

Stage 3 – Alternative Solutions

Stage 4 – Imperative Reasons of Overriding Public Interest (IROPI)
